Watch the Balloons

Everyone knows I have Down syndrome. And when most people think of my Down syndrome they think about the things that I can’t do as well as the typical guy. I can’t speak as clearly. Or run as fast.
What most of you don’t know is that there are many things that I do better – much better – than the typical guy.

For example, I find it very easy to appreciate the little things in life. I stop and take them all in. I feel a sense of awe on a daily basis. I find joy in the smallest events. I stop and “smell the roses” if you will.

Take last night. My best friend Aidan (who also has Down syndrome) and I got balloons from Red Robin. On a count of three we let the balloons go into the sky. We stood there watching their incredible journey as the dusk sky swallowed them up. We were amazed. It was just gravity. But we were captivated.

How about today you all do something for me? How about each of you reading this stops and takes in something small? Just like I do. I know, I know, there is email, and carpool and traffic. But do this for me…. just today….take one moment and smell the roses. Today, for me, “Watch the Balloons”.

Now I am going to go fart on my sister while she is sleeping…….late.

Thank you for this post. You are totally correct that we should stop and really appreciate these moments in our lives. We shouldn’t let the little things pass us by. This morning I hugged my baby girl for a little longer than usual, before we got in the car to go to daycare. I hugged her hard and thanked God that she’s here. Sometimes I’m in such a hurry and forget to do it. This post is a wonderful reminder to stop and smell the dandelions (I would say roses, but that’s not always the case). Thank you for sharing your stories with us, Will. I appreciate it already.

Will, will you tell your mommy that she missed her calling??!! She should have been a writer!! Most of your stories are just plain funny….and then other ones halt me in my tracks. Thank you for sharing this today. And please know for today, I promise to watch the balloons. I’m sharing the story with my co-workers too. Too many of us were grumpy because we worked 15 minutes into lunch…kind of seems silly now. By the way, LOVE the hug at the end of the video.
